For Freelancers & founders in the making · Remote first · East Africa

Ready to run your own thing?
Feel real studio work first.

Growth Collective is for people building a freelance practice or preparing to run their own business, not passive course takers. You join a DesignX department on a studio simulation brief (industry realistic, not a live client account), ship under real deadlines, take feedback like a client would, and leave with work you can show and sell from.

The Model

Not a course. Not a job hunt.
Eight weeks inside how real studio work actually runs.

You join one department and work inside DesignX"™s production workflow, the same brief, tools, and review pressure you"™d face freelancing or running a small studio. Fully remote (chat + Figma/Docs + weekly calls), with optional Nairobi meetups for reviews. Built for freelancers, side hustlers, and people who want to start or grow their own business across East Africa.

Layer One

Real production rhythm

Same tools, same review standards, same handoffs as a working studio. You learn by shipping, not by watching lectures, so when you price a client or hire help later, you"™ve already felt the pace.

Layer Two

cross functional pressure

A full digital transformation needs five disciplines. Cohort 1 runs Design + Marketing on the shared SACCO brief. Future cohorts add Cloud, Cybersecurity, and IoT to the same vision. You still learn handoffs, just scoped to who is in the room this round.

Layer Three

Assets you can sell from

Outputs are built for your portfolio, proposals, and case studies, the proof freelancers and founders need. Refer a business that signs with DesignX and you earn a published referral fee (see terms below), not a vague "maybe."

Industry Brief
Studio simulation · Rotating sector each cohort

A constructed industry brief

Realistic East African scenario, same pressure as a real engagement, without putting a live client"™s data on a public page.

The sample brief is the full transformation vision (all five disciplines). Cohort 1 only assesses Design + Marketing. Cloud, Cybersecurity, and IoT stay on the page as the roadmap for future cohorts on the same kind of brief. Scenario is fictional SACCO practice work, not a live client.

The Journey

8 weeks.
2 hard gates.

Remote first, work first. Delivery, reviews, and collaboration run online. Optional Nairobi sessions for those nearby. Every week has a deliverable. Week 2 and Week 5 are hard quality gates (pass, revise once, or exit). Cohort 1 is Design + Marketing only (12 seats). Reviews are led by the DesignX programme director so quality stays real.

1
Week 1

Onboarding & Briefing

Receive the full studio brief, meet your department, and understand deliverables. Expectations and tasks are set against the published rubric.

2
Week 2 · Quality Gate

First Review Point

Submit your initial work against the rubric. Demonstrate progress, receive structured feedback. Those not meeting standards get a revision window before the next phase.

3
Weeks 3 to 4

Execution Phase

Deep production. Each department works independently on core deliverables inside the same shared simulation brief.

4
Weeks 4 to 5

Design ↔ Marketing coordination

In Cohort 1, Design shares brand assets with Marketing and the campaign has to work with what brand actually shipped. Future cohorts add Cloud, Cyber, and IoT handoffs on the same brief model.

5
Week 5 · Quality Gate

Formal Review Against Rubric

Work is formally assessed. Three outcomes: Pass (continue to refinement), Revise (one week improvement window), or Exit (programme ends here).

6
Weeks 6 to 7

Refinement & Career Direction

Improve your work based on gate feedback. Simultaneously begin preparing personal outputs, career roadmap, portfolio narrative, business direction statement.

7
Week 8 · Show your work

Final presentation

Present what you built. You leave with a case study pack. If you clear the bar, you also get a recommendation letter (rules below).

What you take home

Proof you can run
real work.

Case study pack

Problem, process, and output from the studio brief. Use it in proposals, portfolio, and LinkedIn when someone asks if you have done this kind of work.

Recommendation letter

Only if you clear the published bar (both gates, solid deliverables, strong Week 8). From the programme director, about work you actually submitted.

Rubric (shared on Day 1)

Graded on work quality only, not attendance. Same three lenses at every gate. Reviewed by the DesignX programme director (or a named specialist on your feedback).

1 · Completeness
  • Primary deliverables for that gate are all present
  • Supporting artifacts are documented, not empty shells
  • Links open and match what you claim to submit
2 · Professional format
  • Structure matches industry norms for the department
  • Readable layout, naming, and file hygiene
  • Someone else could review without you explaining live
3 · Reasoning quality
  • Decisions are justified, not only decorated
  • Work is internally consistent with the brief
  • Process is visible (what you tried, what you chose)
Gate outcomes

Pass: all three lenses met for the gate"™s required artifacts. Revise: one 7 day window with written gaps listed; resubmit once. Exit: still below standard after revise, or no submission by deadline without prior agreement. Week 2 Exit ends the programme; Week 5 Exit ends the programme after the revise window.

Recommendation letter rules

Money, clearly

Fee, refunds,
and referrals.

KES 3,500 covers your seat, reviews, and Studio Hub for 8 weeks. When money comes back, and how referrals pay, is written here, not left vague.

KES 3,500 · Programme fee
Due only after acceptance. Covers your seat, Studio Hub access, and review capacity for 8 weeks. Not a deposit on future DesignX client work.
Refunds
Full refund: if we cancel the cohort, or you withdraw in writing before Week 1 kickoff. No fee refund after Week 1 starts, including if you Exit at Week 2 or Week 5, the fee bought the seat and review capacity you used. Exception: if we fail to deliver a written Week 2 review within 10 working days of your on time submission, you may request a full refund and exit.
Referrals · published rates
KES 5,000 when a referred org pays DesignX at least KES 50,000 in the first 90 days. KES 10,000 at KES 100,000+. KES 20,000 at KES 250,000+. Paid within 30 days of the qualifying payment clearing. Same schedule for every referrer. Must be introduced in writing before sales contact starts. Self referrals and existing active clients do not qualify.
Selection Process

You don"™t need a big brand yet.
You do need follow-through.

We keep cohorts small. Early freelancers and first time founders are welcome, we care more about consistency, communication, and hunger than polished credentials.

01

Choose Your Department

Pick the lane you"™ll sell or lead, design, cloud, cyber, IoT, or marketing. One department only so you go deep.

02

Submit Work Samples

Send 1 to 3 examples: past client work, personal projects, side hustles, anything that shows you can produce, not just plan.

03

Record a Voice Note

No formal interview. Two minutes on why this department, what business you"™re building (or want to), and what you want out of the 8 weeks.

04

Acceptance & Payment

If selected, you"™ll hear within 5 days. Pay KES 3,500 (see refund rules), join your department, unlock the brief and Studio Hub.

FAQ

Honest answers
up front.

If you don't find what you need, reach us on WhatsApp or email.

01Is this a job or an internship?

Neither. It is an 8 week studio programme for freelancers and founders in the making. You work a realistic brief with deadlines and reviews so you feel how real client work runs.

02Is Sawa SACCO a real client?

No. It is a fictional SACCO scenario for practice. Review standards match client work. We do not put a live client"™s details on a public recruiting page.

03Who reviews my work?

The DesignX programme director. If a specialist helps, they are named on your feedback. Cap of 12 seats keeps reviews real.

04What is the rubric?

See Rubric on this page: Completeness, Professional format, Reasoning quality. Same bar at every gate. Pass, one revise, or Exit.

05If I Exit at Week 2 or Week 5, do I get a refund?

No refund after Week 1 starts, including a gate Exit. Full refund only if we cancel, you withdraw before Week 1, or we miss the Week 2 review SLA. Details under fees.

06What happens if I fail the Week 5 gate?

One 7 day revise with written gaps. If you still miss the bar, you stop at Week 5. You keep your work. No recommendation letter. Fee is not refunded (see fees above).

07How do referral rewards work?

Same tiers for everyone: KES 5,000 / 10,000 / 20,000 when a referred org pays DesignX KES 50k / 100k / 250k+ in the first 90 days. Paid within 30 days. Written intro before sales starts. Full rules under fees.

08Why is there a KES 3,500 fee?

It pays for a real review seat, not video lectures. People who pay show up.

09Which departments are open in Cohort 1?

Design and Marketing only (6 seats each, 12 total). Cloud, Cyber, and IoT are shown as future tracks. You are only graded on the track you join.

10Do I get a certificate?

No. Growth Collective does not issue certificates. You get a documented case study of your work, and if you clear both quality gates, a recommendation letter from the programme director.

11Is the programme remote?

Yes. Optional Nairobi meetups. Plan for 10 to 15 hours a week. Free tier tools are enough (Figma, Docs, diagramming).
